Psychology

Whether young or old, we often wonder about what the word psychologist actually means. What does it mean and what happens when you go to a psychologist? The word 'psychology' stems from two Greek terms (ψυχή - psyche) meaning breath, spirit or soul and (λογία - logia) study of, respectively.

So the word psychologist describes someone who studies or examines problems related to our spirit or soul (emotions). We all experience difficulties sometimes, whether that is in school/work or just generally not feeling as happy or content with life as we should/could be.

For example, at times we can become very worried about life and every-day tasks, we may question ourself and experience anxiety about things that are maybe not worth worrying about.

Other times, we may feel worthless and start to not like ourselves, worrying too much about what other people think about us. This is likely to affect our self-esteem and confidence, resulting in us isolating ourselves more and more. It is quite normal to not always  be confident, and most people might experience a period in their life were they do not feel secure in themselves.

The problem starts when we cannot regain a more positive self-perception and are stuck feeling that we are worthless, alone and possibly even hopeless:

On the basis of this, a psychologist will meet with you to work through the problem that holds you back, in order for you to become the best you can be.

Sometimes this may result in you doing lots of activities or even some literacy and numeracy. Other times, this may involve you coming to the psychologist for a number of sessions talking through what is upsetting you and so forth. Ultimately, it is our task to help you find the piece that is missing for you to be the best you can be, because the world is your oyster or better yet, it is in your hands.
